Legon Cities React To Public Bashing Over Sick Goalie William Essu

Premier League side Legon Cities Football Club have called on the media and the general public to exercise restraint over the discourse on their sick goalkeeper, William Essu.

In a statement, the Club said its attention had been drawn to media and public discourse about the sick and “neglected” goalkeeper on various platforms.

“Our attention has been drawn to pictures of our goalkeeper William Essu circulating on various social media platforms with discussions on traditional media platforms.”

The statement further said the Club was amassing all the needed resources to address the situation.

“We plead with the media and general public to be circumspect in the reportage of Essu’s health as all efforts are being made to address the player’s current situation.”

The health condition of Cities’ second-choice shot stopper came to public notice after the death of their first-choice goalie Sylvester Sackey died after what the Club described as a “short illness”.

It is reported that both Legon Cities and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) owe the goalie salaries and bonuses respectively.

Essu who formed part of Ghana’s U23 squad in the AFCON qualifier is reported to have written to the head Coach of the Black Meteors Ibrahim Tanko few months ago to demand his bonuses for medical attention.

In the said letter, he wrote that he had exhausted all his life savings on his treatment, which seemed to be in vain. At the time, he said he needed more money for medical checkups.

“Due to this I’m still ill and in the house as well. I humbly request that the GFA to humbly release our bonuses for the match we played against Algeria for the qualifier to us so that I can use it for my medical care and be fit again for my beloved country and club again.”

He concluded, “I hope my request will be given the maximum consideration.”

Following the circulation of these, the Club has come under public backlash characterising their treatment as neglect.

“He has been sick and neglected by the club, he can’t even speak properly and breathe well,” a tweep said.
