Lawyer of Arrested Barker Vormawor Seeks Medical Attention for Him
Lawyer to one of the leaders of pressure group Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker Vormawor has written to the Ghana Police Service to make available to his client medical attention.
According to Lawyer Srem Sai, private medical care which we procured for Barker- who was arrested on September 23 after he turned himself in- faced challenges accessing him.
A letter to the Police Service said the private medical practitioner “had to wait at the police station entrance for hours to be allowed access to him” though the “police medical care was not extended to him”.
“I will be grateful if you could, promptly, procure professional medical care for MR OLIVER MAWUSE BARKER-VORMAWOR…This request derives from the recommendation from a preliminary medical examination which was conducted on MR BARKER-VORMAWOR after he was taken seriously ill earlier this evening.”
Barker was arrested a day after he was declared wanted for “unlawful acts” during their three-day demonstration against illegal mining.
“The Ghana Police Service has arrested Oliver Barker Vormawor, one of the leaders of Democracy Hub for the various unlawful acts he was involved in on Saturday, 21st September and Sunday, 22nd September 2024, at the 37 Intersection in Accra.”
He is yet to be arraigned in court.
The police on Sunday, the second day of the protest, arrested 42 of the protesters.
According to a statement by the police, the demonstrators unlawfully assembled at the 37 Intersection and attacked Police officers performing their lawful duties.
It said they entered a Police vehicle, removed the ignition key and threw it away, pushing down Police crash barriers, “obstructing traffic, causing unlawful damage, and disturbing the peace among others”.
So far, 39 accused persons have been arraigned in court and remanded.
