Lawyer Drags GLC, Chief Justice To Court
Private legal practitioner Kwame Fosu-Gyeabour has sued the General Legal Council (GLC), the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo and Judicial Secretary, Justice Cyra Pamela C.A. Koranteng, over a circular directing courts against granting the plaintiff an audience.
The said circular issued by the Judicial Secretary and sanctioned by the CJ and the Chairperson of the GLC, premised the order on what it said was a failure by Fosu-Gyeabour to renew his licence for the year 2024.
“Kindly take note that Mr. Kwame Aning Fosu-Gyeabour’s license has not been renewed for the year 2024. All Courts are therefore not to grant him an audience until further notice from the General Legal Council. The Honourable Lady Chief Justice and Chairperson of the General Legal Council have further directed that any order issued on Mr. Kwame Aning Fosu-Gyeabour’s application will be void,” the circular issued on February 16 read.
In his writ, the legal practitioner with 23 years of experience denied the licence renewal allegation. According to him, his licence was renewed before January 3, 2024, with all requisite bar dues settled.
He is, among other things, demanding a declaration to nullify the circular; an order to set aside the circular; a perpetual order restraining the defendants from preventing him from plying his trade; and general damages.
Mr Fosu-Gyeabour was handed a 12-month suspension by the GLC in April 2023 for misconduct, a suspension he has appealed and has obtained a stay of execution against.
