KMA Plans Distribution of 1000L Bins to Enhance Waste Management

Mr. Prosper Kotoka, the Director of Waste Management at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), has announced the assembly’s plan to distribute 1000L bins as part of their comprehensive waste management strategy.

In an interview with Samuel Kwaw on NKwantannanso June 2, Mr. Kotoka expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “We believe that the provision of these 1000L bins will greatly contribute to improving waste management practices in our city.”

In specific areas of the central business district such as Roman Hill, Pampaso, Dr. Mensah, and Mbrom, the 1000L bins will be strategically placed at 50-metre intervals.

“At each interval, two bins will be provided—one for organic waste and the other for other types of waste”

“By placing the bins at regular intervals, we aim to make waste disposal more convenient and accessible for residents and businesses in these areas,” he said.

Regarding concerns about potential theft, he reassured the public, stating, “We have taken precautions to address the issue of bin theft. The 1000L bins are designed to be too large and heavy to be easily stolen. Furthermore, we will be recruiting site attendants to ensure proper monitoring and security.”

While the bins are ready and available at the metro office, their distribution has been delayed due to the unavailability of trucks required for waste collection from these bins.

He acknowledged this setback, stating, “We are currently working on procuring the necessary trucks to facilitate waste collection from the 1000L bins. Once this logistical challenge is resolved, we will proceed with the distribution.”

Mr. Kotoka urged Ghanaians to actively support this waste management initiative, emphasising the importance of responsible waste disposal.

He stated, “We call upon all residents and businesses to embrace this effort by using the provided bins and refraining from littering. Together, we can create a cleaner and healthier environment for all.”

The distribution of these 1000L bins marks a significant step forward in the KMA’s waste management strategies, aiming to promote responsible waste disposal and create a cleaner Kumasi for all residents.

He emphasised, “We are committed to improving waste management practices in Kumasi, and we believe that the distribution of these bins will contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable city.”
