The suspect together with three others armed with a pump-action gun attacked and shot a mobile money merchant at his business centre.
The victim was also robbed of an unspecified amount of money per the police report.
Police investigations led to the arrest of three including Godfred.
Godfred died later while in police custody.
Per an account by his family, Godfred was beaten up by the police during interrogation and died while being transferred to the Police Hospital.
His body was then deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The mother and a relative of the deceased gave this account in an interview on Onua Tv on Thursday but the police have denied subjecting the victim to torture.
According to the police, the suspect complained of ill health and was rushed to the hospital but died while receiving medical attention.
“An initial investigation into his demise by the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) established that the deceased suspect was handled professionally by the officers from the time he was arrested until his passing. The PPSB has also made contact with the family of the deceased suspect as part of its investigation”, a statement from the police said.
