June 28 Declared A Holiday
Ghana’s Ministry of Interior has declared next week Wednesday a public holiday.
It marks Eid-ul-Adha.
“The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday, 28th June 2023 which marks Eid-ul-Adha, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” a statement from the Ministry on Tuesday said.
The Eid-ul-Adha festival is the second and the larger of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam which marks the end of Hajj- one of the five pillars of Islam.
It commemorates the obedience of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmail upon Allah’s command.
During this annual festival, Muslims who can afford to sacrifice a ritually acceptable animal share the flesh equally among themselves, the poor, and friends and neighbours.
