Indelible Ink No Longer In Use- EC
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has put an end to the inking of the left little finger of voters after casting votes in all elections in the country.
At a press conference on Monday, the country’s EC Chairperson, Jean Mensah said there is no need for use of indelible in any longer.
She said the introduction of a biometric voter’s register puts the country and votes on a safer side since all voters at the point of voting get verified and booked by their system.
According to her, a voted electorate will be flagged when he enters the second time to cast his or her vote.
“When we were not using biometrics, we were using your face. We look at your face and we say that this picture looks like you. Biometric technology makes it difficult for a person who has been verified and cast their votes to come the second time.
“So there is no need for indelible ink. Once you have been verified, it goes into the system and you can’t come back the second time… Because of biometric features, your facial features or your fingerprints are recognized and verified… Therefore there is no need for indelible ink which has been in place since the beginning of 2012 when we were not using biometrics,” he explained.
She also pointed out that persons who try to engage in multiple voting would commit an electoral offence.
The review begins with the ongoing district-level elections today, December 19, 2023, and will be implemented in the 2024 general elections.
