I Stand Opposed To Homosexuality – Bawumia

The Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has publicly announced his opposition to the practice of homosexuality.

According to him, his opposition will remain inert.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate made his stance on the topic known during the Eid celebration at the Central Mosque in Kumasi on April 11, 2024.

“On the issue of LGBTQ, first of all, it is important to note that our cultural and societal norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality. Furthermore, as a Muslim, my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith.

“The Holy Quran is replete with verses frowning on LGBTQ acts, including same-sex marriages. My faith is therefore very strictly against the practice of homosexuality, no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts’. No shades of grey. Therefore, I personally cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana as well as our societal norms and values, clearly and unequivocally forbid.”

This stance, he asserted is unflinching.

The Parliament of Ghana has passed an anti-LGBTQ bill; however, its assent by the President has become a bone of contention as the President has refused to receive the bill.

The Presidency in a letter to Parliament used a civil action against the bill as an excuse for its rejection.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry has advised the President against assenting to the bill referencing financial implications it may have on the country.
