Hire Personnel from Mining Communities – Miners Association to Mining Companies
Mr. Ebenezar Ekow Ayehu, the General Secretary of the Small Scale Miners Association, has called on mining companies to prioritize hiring individuals from the communities where they operate.
Speaking in an interview with George Adjei on June 1, he emphasized that research has indicated that mining companies tend to employ personnel from outside these communities.
“Even if people here in the mining communities are not educated or skilled, they can be trained,” he remarked.
Regarding the recent incident at the Anglogold Ashanti mine, he expressed concern over the challenging circumstances and the efforts of individuals to find ways to survive.
He urged authorities to develop a long-term solution, as the illegal mining activities will persist unless addressed effectively.
Recently, AngloGold Ashanti confirmed that some illegal miners, who were trapped in the company’s mine shaft, have successfully exited.
In a statement, AngloGold Ashanti announced, “The individuals, who had entered the underground area without authorization, walked out of the mine through the main exit point on their own accord and are in the custody of the Ghana Police Service. No injuries were reported.”
Following the arrest of the illegal miners who exited the mine shaft, a team of armed military and police personnel was deployed to restore calm in the area.
