GHC65K Lost in Fraudulent Online Investment Schemes in January 2025

According to the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), a financial loss of GhC65,860.00 has been recorded in fraudulent online investment schemes this year.

The loss covers the period between January 1, 2025, to January 29, 2025, it said as it issued a warning over such schemes.

The fraudulent activities, it noted, were on ascendency as the culprits operating under various aliases or pseudonyms lure unsuspecting victims with promises of high returns on investments.

“Between January 1 and 29, 2025, the SA recorded ten (10) of such cases amounting to a total financial loss of GHS 65,860.00.”

In their bid to appear credible, it recounted that the threat actors falsely present their schemes as subsidiaries of established foreign companies like Hut 8 Corporation- a publicly traded digital asset mining and high-performance computing company headquartered in Canada.

These scammers ran targeted advertisements on social media platforms where they encourage victims to invest money, it said.

“In some cases, victims are told their investments will fund crypto-mining equipment leases or online business tasks. Victims are promised substantial returns but once funds are transferred, they neither see any returns nor recover their initial investment.”

According to the Authority, the threat actors frequently rebrand under new names to evade detection by law enforcement, local regulators and users.

The public has been urged to be cautious of such online platforms and advertisements and always verify the legitimacy and credibility of investment opportunities by consulting official channels or recognised regulatory bodies.

Meanwhile, the CSA encouraged prompt reporting of any suspicious contacts or fraudulent schemes to them for further investigations.
