Ghanaian Fortuna Teenage Player Succumbs to Swimming Accident
German football club Fortuna Düsseldorf has been thrown into mourning after their Ghanaian U17 player Newton Opoku-Mensah tragically lost his life.
The 17-year-old was involved in an accident while swimming in Duisburg Lake on Tuesday evening and later gave up the ghost in a hospital while receiving treatment, according to the club.
The club has since suspended all training and match operations of their youth teams from U9 to U19 as a sign of mourning.
“The whole club is shocked and in deep mourning. The training and match operations of all youth teams from U9 to U19 will be suspended until further notice.”
They have also sent out their condolences to the relatives, the entire U17 team and staff .
The Board Member for Sport & Communication, Klaus Allofs told the club’s media, “We are deeply shocked and cannot believe this news. Newton was a young man who lived his dream and has now died much too early. Our sympathy and deep sympathy go out to Newton’s family and loved ones, as well as to all teammates and the entire team in our NLZ.”
