GH¢21m Spent on Black Star Square Renovation for Independence Celebration Despite Venue Change – PAC Hears

The Office of Government Machinery has disclosed how a whopping GH¢21 million was used to renovate the Black Star Square for the 67th Independence Day celebration, though the venue eventually changed.

The celebration was held in the Eastern Region despite the payment for the initial work.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee on March 31, 2026, Chief Director Abubakar Wayo explained that the venue change was an executive decision made after the contract was awarded.

According to him, the renovated space became essential for the inauguration of the current President.

“I do not think we had the authority to halt the project simply because the contract specified the venue for the 67th Independence anniversary. We were directed by a higher authority to proceed,” he stated.
