GGSA Director-General: Earthquakes and Tremors Unpredictable

Isaac K. Mwinbelle, the Acting Director-General of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), has emphasized that earthquakes and tremors are unpredictable natural disasters that cannot be foreseen by experts or individuals.

At a workshop for media practitioners in Kumasi, he educated attendees on how to safeguard themselves against earthquakes and avoid the spread of misinformation that can lead to panic and fear.

The workshop’s goal was to equip media professionals with enough knowledge to instruct the public on what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.

Mwinbelle emphasised the media’s crucial role in sharing precise information and aiding people in preparing for earthquakes.

“The Ghana Geological Survey Authority has mapped up to 60% of the country’s geographical areas in order to provide guidance to the government on issues related to geology, geohazards, and the exploration and extraction of minerals for the nation’s development,” he added.

However, a lack of resources has hampered the institution’s ability to complete the remaining 40% of the country’s geographic region.
