GAF: Our Men Aren’t Providing Security To Mining Firms

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has dismissed reports that its personnel are providing mining firms with security to engage in illegal mining activities.

In a statement, the GAF dismissed the reports as false.

“GAF wishes to state categorically that there are no military personnel deployed for such activities and no soldier is providing security for any mining company in any forest reserve in any part of the country”.

Following the circulation of a video that captured Mantiahene of Bekwai saying that the military was providing security to illegal miners in a forest reserve in Amansie Central, the GAF said, a patrol team was deployed to the forest reserves in the municipality on September 28, 2022.

“The military patrol team picked up some individuals dressed in US military-pattern camouflage uniform working for a private security firm which has been contracted by a registered small scale company named Elvis and Co Mining Ltd” a statement from the Forces said, adding that such uniforms shouldn’t be misconstrued as that of the GAF.

The GAF, therefore, raised concerns about the misinterpretation of such uniforms for that of the GAF.

It also assured of its commitment to fighting illegal mining in the country.
