Britain Hasn’t Been Forthcoming In Terms Of Investment In Ghana- Otumfuo

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has noted that Britain’s investment in Ghana has not been substantial.

In a candid conversation with the outgoing British High Commissioner to Ghana, HE Harriet Thompson, on July 9, 2025, His Majesty said the UK had fallen short of expectations.

Compared to China’s investment in the West African country, the visibly disappointed Monarch said the UK could do better, moreso as Trade envoys have been visiting.

“In terms of advancing investment, Britain has not been forthcoming. I have to be honest. Trade delegations are coming in but I don’t think it’s been very effective for us to feel it. The impact of China is still there for us to see so I believe the Western brothers and sisters will be able to match it up and see how best we do it. I know Britain has its problems but your good should be good enough for us.”

Otumfuo, however, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the High Commissioner, particularly citing her easy accessibility.

“During your time you did so much to bring Ghana and Britain together. There have been various initiatives that you led… I have been following with keen interest and have to say that you made an impact on us. You have shown that you were here to bring Ghana and Britain together,”His Majesty added.

HE Thompson was at the Manhyia Palace to bid farewell to the King as she wrapped up her duty tour.

In his remarks, Otumfuo expressed his expectation for her successor to meet the bar she had raised.

“I hope whoever is coming continues from where you left off. Your performance has been so great and your performance has been appreciated…We wish you well in your future endeavours. Wherever you go, know Ghana is always a home to you.”

She used the occasion to reflect on her fond memories mostly from her participation in Manhyia events and expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the King for the warm embrace.

“His Majesty has been an inspiration during my time. He has been one of my best-treasured experiences to come to Manhyia and celebrations such as Akwasidae and anniversaries such as His Majesty’s 25th Anniversary on the throne, the Commemoration of the return of gold artefacts that were looted and commemoration of the return of Prempeh II from Seychelles.”
