Finance Ministry Says E-levy Is Not Double Taxing

The Finance Ministry has said the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) does not amount to double taxing as it has been asserted in the public domain by some.

The clarification was made during the Government town hall meeting in Wa in the Upper West Region of Ghana.

It was indicated that tax is just like the Value Added Tax (VAT) and the Communications Service Tax (CST).

“The E-levy like any other tax has a life of its own. We have an income tax, we pay income taxes, when we receive our income, we pay tax on it, that is the income tax. When we are buying something we pay VAT on the same money we are paying income tax on. If we are consuming Communication, we pay Communications Service Tax from the same money we are paying income tax on. So E-levy is a tax on its own just like all other taxes and does not amount to double taxing.”

A section of the general public including the minority has demanded the form of tax the E-levy takes, calling it “theft”.
