Exempt Ghana From IELTS Requirements- Ablakwa to UK

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has appealed to the United Kingdom for an exemption from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) requirement.

He is also seeking a waiver of the chargeable fees.

The Minister, during a discussion with the British High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Christian Rogg, on January 6, 2026, argued that scrapping the requirement was necessary as English has long been the medium of instruction in Ghana.

“I made a special appeal for Ghana to be exempted from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the required fees payable by Ghanaian students and professionals since English has long been the Medium of Instruction in Ghana.”

He further called for a government-to-government framework for the protection and improved conditions of particularly Ghanaian health practitioners who work and aspire to work in the UK.

The Minister reported that the engagement was used to assess increasingly buoyant bilateral relations and align priority areas of focus for the new year.

They agreed on deeper cooperation in areas of security, trade, job creation, health, education, governance and constitutional review.
