Bola Tinubu Elected ECOWAS Chairman
The newly elected President of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been elected as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of States and Government.
His election was held on Sunday, July 9, 2023, during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority in Bissau in Guinea-Bissau.
Until his election, H E Umaro Sissoco Embaló of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau held onto the position.
The Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Governments during the session discussed the security and political situations in the Region, among other issues.
In an address, President Tinubu urged the Authority to fight against the coup and pledged his utmost best in repositioning the bloc well economically and democratically.
“We will not allow coup after coup in the West Africa sub-region. We will take this up seriously with the African Union… the European Union and Britain and America.
“Democracy is very tough to marry but it’s the best for most governments and we all ascribe to it. We must bite back. We can’t sit like a toothless bulldog in ECOWAS For the confidence reposed in me, I pledge to you, Your Excellences, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, that I will do my best. I’m just new… we will work collectively to pursue inclusive economic integration.”
He added, “We should serve a warning to exploiters that our people have suffered enough. We should pledge here in furtherance to our economic recovery.”
