Bantama Roadside Sellers Evicted
Nana Afia Kyeiwaa, the leader of the Bantama market, Race Course market, and Suame market, has ordered the eviction of all roadside traders at Bantama High Street. The decision was taken to prevent road accidents, reduce traffic congestion and ensure public safety.
In an interview with Opemsuo News Reporter, Adwoa Serwaa Yonkodo, she revealed that she has provided the traders with a proper place to conduct their business at the Race Course market.
“The traders have left the designated area to sell their wares on the roadside because they lack certain amenities,” she added.
The road side traders at Bantama also explained bitterly that they left the Race Course market and resorted to selling on the roadside because there was low patronage at the Race Course market due to the bad state of the roads.
One trader expressed his concern, saying, “When it rains, it is impossible to sell anything at Race Course. Every place is muddy. That is the reason we abandoned the designated trading area. The market is no longer attractive to buyers”.
The eviction of the road side sellers at Bantama High Street has generated mixed reactions from the public. While some people have praised the move as necessary to prevent accidents and reduce traffic congestion, others have expressed concern over the plight of the traders who have been left without a means of livelihood.
It remains to be seen how the affected traders will be assisted by the authorities to relocate to the designated trading areas, and how the challenges of bad roads and low patronage can be addressed to improve their businesses.
