Ato Forson Ambulance Trial: NDC Hails Appeal Court Decision
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has hailed the decision by the Court of Appeal to acquit and discharge their member, Cassiel Ato Forson as a victory for justice.
In reaction to the ruling delivered on July 30, 2024, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey said the country must past the era where the judiciary is “weaponized”.
“This verdict marks a significant victory for justice and delivers a damning indictment of the undemocratic NPP government, which has eroded our democratic gains over the past seven years in all aspects.
“Their disgraceful strategy to imprison opposition voices under false charges has been laid bare. We must not tolerate such a brazen abuse of power. Never again should Ghana suffer such undemocratic actions, where the government’s fear of scrutiny trumps the principles of justice and freedom.”
In court on Tuesday, a split 2–1 decision allowed an appeal against the ruling of the High Court, Accra dated March 30, 2023, dismissing a submission of no case filed by the accused persons and ordering them to open their defence.
However, the A-G is of the view that the decision of the Court of Appeal is “grossly unfair” to the nation and “inimical to the fight against impunity and abuse in public office”.
“The Office of the Attorney-General considers the decision of the Court of Appeal to be perverse in the quest for public accountability and the rule of law.
“The decision clearly is heavily against the weight of the cogent evidence led by the prosecution in substantiation of all the charges against the accused persons at the trial.”
He is therefore bent on immediately appealing the decision of the Court of Appeal.
