Asantehemaa Dɔte Yie: You Aren’t Coming For a Beauty Contest; Mourners Warned

Persons seeking to visit Manhyia Palace to pay their last respects to the late Queen of the Asante Kingdom, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, have been warned against wearing inappropriate outfits.

A traditional executioner in an interview with Opemsuo Radio emphasised that the event is not to showcase beauty but a solemn one to affirm solidarity with the King.

He noted that decent black attire is the dress code and stated that anyone violating it would be turned away.

In addition, he said mourners before entering the court of the Queen will have to take off their shoes or slippers, as well as any jewellery.

“No ornament is allowed. We are not here to show off beauty. We are here to comfort the King,” he stated.

“Dress with decency and come. At the entrance of the residence of the Queen, you must take off your shoes. The men must lower their cloths at their shoulders as a form of respect for the Queen.”

In addition, he said phones are not allowed into the court, warning that, “You will be dealt with when you are caught with any concealed recording device to take pictures.”

He also noted that kids are permitted to file past the late Queen.

The carefully planned burial rites will witness a series of activities from September 15 to September 18, when the rites will come to an end.

Her Majesty will be buried on the last day at Breman Baamu.

Filing past is reserved to take place sequentially among dignitaries and the general public from September 15 to 18, between 5 am and 5 pm, except for the last day, when it will end at 11 am to make way for a burial service at 3 pm.

A key point to note is the institution of the restriction on outdoor movement effective 7 pm on September 18 to make way for the burial of Her Majesty.
