Asamoah Gyan Delves Into Rivalry with Ayew

Former Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan has waded into the true state of his relationship with Andre Dede Ayew, his successor as captain of the senior national male team.

A rift between the two was speculated after Andre took over as the captain before Gyan announced his retirement.

This was confirmed by Ghana’s all-time scorer during a live video on Instagram on January 2, 2025.

According to him, the rivalry was sponsored by some individuals to wished to benefit from the situation.

He chose to put it: “Andre had a genuine love for me but he was brainwashed because of people who had a personal interest.”

“They told him ‘Asamoah is this and that and you can do it.’ That has brought that so-called rivalry. I’m not a rival to anybody. If you hear me saying anything bad against Dede then someone told me something I didn’t think through. That’s how it is.”

However, Gyan believes it’s about time they let go of those contentions for the sake of the betterment of the senior national team which currently is in disarray.

“This is the time we have to come together and this is how Ghana will benefit.”

Gyan retired from football in 2023 after a sterling football career spanning two decades.
