Akwatia By-election: NPP Boycotts Peace Council Meeting Over NDC Representation

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has boycotted a planned meeting between political parties and the National Peace Council over the representation of the governing party.
According to the National Organiser of the opposition party, Henry Nana Boakye, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) side had no national executive on board.
It rather delegated constituency executives to attend the meeting, he said.
“We are very disappointed because we accorded this meeting with utmost respect. We came into this meeting fully represented by the Eastern Regional Chairman, Jeff Konadu Addo and the National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, only for us to see the representatives of the NDC side. All of them are constituency officers, constituency organisers, deputy organisers, deputy secretary,” he told the press.
It is his considered view that the representative from the NDC side cannot commit the NDC to any peace process regarding the Akwatia by-election and thereby their decision to boycott the meeting until a “proper” representation.
“We raised this objection before the meeting commenced, and we also requested that there is a need for the NDC to be fully represented by their national executives; other than that, we will not be able to participate in this.”
The election is slated for September 4, 2025, and follows the death of Hon Ernest Kumi.
