Akufo-Addo will Destroy his Legacy if he Refuses to Assent to the Anti-Gay bill, Warns Sam George
Hon. Samuel Nartey George, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo Prampram, expressed his concern during an interview on Amammere ne Amanie with Kwaku Frimpong on July 8, stating that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would destroy his legacy if he fails to assent to the Anti-Gay Bill.
According to Hon. George, the President’s power stems from the authority granted to him by Ghanaians, emphasizing the importance of listening to the voices of the citizens.
“We have given the President the power. He has no power. I hope he listens to us, Ghanaians, because all the religions in Ghana support the bill. If he doesn’t, we will question whom he is listening to. Refusing to assent to the bill would destroy his legacy,” he asserted.
Furthermore, the MP explained that even if the President does not assent to the bill, Parliament still has the authority to pass it into law.
“If, after six months of receiving the bill, he fails to assent to it, he must provide an explanation to Parliament. Members of Parliament have the power to vote and pass the law. In this case, the President’s assent will not be necessary. Given the unanimous agreement among all parliamentarians, obtaining the required votes will be straightforward,” he stated.
On July 5, Parliament unanimously adopted the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill (Anti-Gay Bill), 2022. The bill aims to uphold Ghanaian family values and prohibit activities associated with LGBTQ+ individuals. It will now proceed to the consideration stage.
