Afenyo-Markin to Petition IGP After Alleged Assault By Police Officer

The Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says he is preparing a petition to be served on the Inspector-General of Police to demand an investigation after claiming a police officer assaulted him on Monday.
“Accordingly, I am formally filing a petition to the Inspector-General of Police to demand a full investigation into the conduct of Constable Forson. There were numerous senior police officers who witnessed the appalling conduct of the Constable firsthand and can corroborate the events,” he said in a statement.
It comes after the Minority leader in Parliament was captured in a viral video striking a police officer during the ‘Save for Judiciary’ Demonstration on April 5, 2025.
According to him, the police officer identified as Constable Forson, deliberately struck the left side of my chest with the full force of his right palm at the Parliament House when leaders were about to present a petition.
“The impact of the hit dazed me, and I was visibly shaken and short of breath. In that moment, I spontaneously protested his conduct, asking why he would seek to harm me,” he reported in a statement issued on May 6, 2025.
He condemned the alleged attack as disrespectful and a stain on the professionalism of the police service.
“This unprovoked, disrespectful, and shameful attack is a stain on the professionalism of the Ghana Police Service. Throughout the demonstration, the conduct of officers at the Supreme Court and the Jubilee House was commendable, professional and respectful. Some were even seen sharing water for demonstrators, a testament to the discipline and decorum expected of public officers.”
The Minority leader, while addressing the video in circulation, noted that some individuals seek to twist the narrative and suggest that he was the aggressor when he was “merely protesting the officer’s conduct”.
The police service says an investigation has been initiated into the incident.
