A/R Minister Bans Tricycle, Bikes From Airport

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah has banned motorbikes and tricycles from plying beyond the Airport Roundabout to the Kumasi Airport.

The Minister characterized the movement of these vehicles at the airport as unacceptable in a press statement on Thursday.

In his statement, the Minister noted, “In this regard, the Ashanti Regional Security Council, hereby directs that all motorbikes and tricycles are not allowed to ride beyond the Airport Roundabout to the Airport.”

Riders who flout the directive will be prosecuted, he threatened.

“Any rider who flouts this directive shall be apprehended, arraigned, and prosecuted before the Court.”

“It is the expectation of the Regional Security Council that riders of motorbikes and tricycles within the region will strictly abide by the above directive to avoid a brush with the law. Let us all work together to make the region an orderly and peaceful one for all. May God bless the Ashanti Region and our Homeland Ghana.”

On August 1, 2023, a ban on tricycle operations within areas such as Kejetia, Adum, Alabar and Dr Mensah in the CBD came into force.

Ban From CBD
It comes four months after the Minister restricted tricycles from the Central Business District (CBD). In the course of enforcement in the first week, 46 tricycles were impounded for flouting the law.

This received fierce opposition from riders who, in turn, went on rampage and besieged the office of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to demand the release of the seized tricycles.

Their action led to the destruction of some properties at the office and caused injuries to six police officers.
