A/R: 23 Illegal Miners, Including 4 Women, Arrested for Polluting Oda River

The Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission and the Bekwai Forest District have arrested 23 illegal miners mining along the Oda River in the Ashanti Region.

The suspects included four women.

The suspects’ activities have reportedly caused pollution in the Oda River, which provides water to the surrounding forest.

Their activities are said to adversely affect farmers in Aburokyere, Bepotenten, and Sukuumu, all located in the Amansie Central district, as they rely on the river for irrigation.

The situation has left many peasant farmers idle.

The team, made up of 31 Rapid Response personnel, seven Forest guards, two FRM personnel and one DDM, as part of the operation, seized 82 Changfan machines, 77 Pumping machines, 21 motorbikes and destroyed 20 structures.
