A Hungry Man Can Do Anything To a Patient- Unpaid Rotational Nurses and Midwives

Unpaid rotational nurses and midwives have threatened to withdraw their services if the government fails to disburse their allowances within one week.
The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana at a presser on Wednesday said members have been plunged into economic hardship due to the non-payment.
The group says members are unable to pay their utility bills, feed and transport themselves to work due as they have not received allowances for the past year.
At the press conference, the group said the consequences could take a toll on their service delivery.
“A hungry man can do anything to a patient, so please, we are going through a lot. We have been borrowing, sports betting, among other things. About two years ago, a colleague rotational nurse, hanged himself because he owed a lot of people and he had no means to pay them.”
“Life had been very unbearable. Some of us, when we see our landlords and landladies, have to hide because they are on us for utility bills. We have friends we borrow from, and we have to keep lying to them. It is spoiling our integrity.”
The Association, therefore, urged Ghanaians to join in the call for the clearance of the arrears.
“We are telling Ghanaians to come in to advocate for us. Put yourselves in our shoes, working for two months without a salary, and we go through this for a whole year.”
It further urged the government to include the payment of health workers in the resetting agenda.
“This is uncalled for, and this has to change. If we are resetting Ghana, then we have to reset this one too.”
