FDA: Recalled US Shampoo Products Not Registered In Ghana

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) of Ghana has said the five dry shampoo products recalled from the market by America’s FDA are not registered products in Ghana.

The products are said to contain benzene- a chemical that can cause cancers.

The United States FDA, at the end of October, issued a voluntary product recall for dry shampoo following concerns about potentially elevated levels of benzene.

The products earmarked include Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé

“The announcement indicates that 70% of the recalled brands showed definite levels of benzenes. The manufacturer of the products classified the presence of benzene as an error during the manufacturing process”, a statement from Ghana’s FDA stated.

According to the FDA, Benzene is a known human carcinogen.

Humans are exposed to the chemical through inhalation, ingestion, or through the skin.

Potentially, it said, benzene can cause cancers including leukaemia and some blood disorders which can be life-threatening.

Ghana’s FDA asserts that none of these products has been registered for use in the country.

However, it said its surveillance teams will continue to monitor the markets for any of the products.
