Police Arrest Wontumi Radio Presenter Over Election Misinformation
A Kumasi-based radio presenter has found himself on the wrong side of the law after allegedly misinforming the public on the upcoming Presidential election.
Oheneba Nana Asiedu was arrested by the Ashanti Regional Police Command on Saturday, November 23 after he honoured a police invitation over the unprofessional conduct during a show on the pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) media organization.
This was confirmed in a statement issued over the weekend.
“The suspect is currently in Police custody and the case will be presented before the court for him to face justice.”
He will be charged with publication of false news contrary to section 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), the Service noted.
Oheneba is captured in viral video announcing to his listeners that the Presidential election will be conducted on different dates for each of the candidates.
According to the police, the false information has the propensity to disturb the public peace.
It added, “We urge the public, particularly media practitioners, to exercise utmost caution and responsibility, and refrain from publishing false news which is likely to disturb public peace before, during and after the upcoming general elections.”
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has reacted to the false information, calling it misleading and urging the public to disregard it.
It noted, “The General Public is informed that the 2024 Election will take place on 7th December, 2024. Voters are reminded that voting on the 7th of December, 2024, starts from 7am until 5pm.”
