Keep Away from Our Base; GAF To Tema Youth
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has cautioned the youth of Tema against staging any more attacks at their installations and personnel in the jurisdiction.
The GAF is poised to retaliate against any attack with the necessary action, it said in a statement released over the weekend.
The caution comes on the back of an attack on a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy by revellers at a festival at Tema Newtown on April 12, injuring three personnel in the process.
Three suspects were arrested and subsequently handed over to Tema Newtown District Police by the naval personnel, the statement said.
It recounted, “A mob, suspected to be part of the participants in the festivities, later attacked the Tema Naval Base with stones and other implements with the aim of releasing their colleagues. At a stage, the security of the Base was threatened, and in order to protect the sensitive installations in the Base, warning shots were fired to repel the attack. It was later reported by the Police that two civilians were brought to the Tema General Hospital dead. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained.’
The GAF said a third attack was witnessed on April 13 when the mob attacked the Tema Naval Base and the Naval Barracks at Tema New Town (Biekro Barracks), leading to the destruction of property.
Calling for calm, the GAF said it has commenced investigations together with the Ghana Police Service.
It further cautioned that further attacks on its personnel and base would be met with the requisite action.
“We wish, however, to caution the youth of Tema that any further attacks on our installations or personnel would be met with the appropriate response.”
