NDC MPs Denied Access to National Cathedral Site

A heavy security presence at the entrance of the construction site of the National Cathedral thwarted efforts by some National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs) to use the premises for a press conference on March 6.

Some footage shared by Opemsuo Radio’s Parliamentary Correspondent, Kwaku Bofa, showed MPs including MP for North Tongu, Okudzeto Abakwa, MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, MP for Odododiodio, Nii Lante Vanderpuye and MP for Ketu South, Dzifa Gomashie at the scene.

Also present was the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi.

In a heated exchange among the security officers present, which included military and police personnel, the Commander asserted that the construction site was not safe for intrusion. Furthermore, he stated that no worker was on site when he was pushed to escort them inside.

“The contractor is not on site. Today is a holiday. No one is on site.”

In pursuit of their goal, Sam George chipped in, “Our constituents’ money have sunk in there. We want to know the value of work done in there.”

In a compromise, the security agreed to allow them to undertake their press conference at the entrance of the site.

As part of their press conference, the members of the opposition party commissioned the project, which is still at the foundation stage.

Cutting a ribbon to signify the commissioning of the project which has swallowed some GH¢339 million so far, Sam George declared, “In the name of Akufo-Addo, Mahamudu Bawumia and Ken Ofori Atta, we commission this expensive hole in the world in the world.”

It will be recalled that during the 2021 Budget statement and Economic Policy, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta said the project will be commissioned on March 6, 2024.
