We Need Long-Term Approach to Black Stars Woes – Prez
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has proffered a long-term and far-sighted remedy to the woes of the senior national men’s team, Black Stars.
During the Presentation of the State of the Nations Address (SONA) on February 27, he acknowledged the output of the national team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cote D’Ivoire as the all-time lowest in the country’s history.
“The recent AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire was probably the nadir of the performance of the Black Stars, and has left the nation saddened.”
He continued, “Mr Speaker, I believe it is time for us to take a long-term, far-sighted approach to correct what has gone wrong.”
In dealing with this, President Akufo-Addo disclosed a drafted policy by his government will be unveiled soon.
Dubbed Presidential Policy on Football, he said it scouting, grooming and developing talent at the district grassroots level takes center stage.
“The school sports department of the Ministry of Education will work hand in hand with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration and synergy with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), to build district, regional and national juvenile teams for both boys and girls.”
The senior national team failed to win any of their three group games in the AFCON exiting with two points after drawing two games and losing one.
The results cost Chris Hughton his role as the head coach with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) immediately constituting a committee to scout for a new coach.
The results compelled some sports journalists to stage a demonstration to demand a review in the selection and management of the Black Stars.
