Asante Kotoko Near Centennial As They Clock 88

Twenty-four (24)-time Premier League title holders Asante Kotoko Sporting Club (SC) is today 88 years.

The Porcupine Warriors have received a message from FC Samartex calling it a great club on its anniversary which is gradually nearing a century.

The Club’s foundation was laid by 13 Asante men in 1926 under the name Ashanti United Football Club which will soon be rebranded as Kumasi Titanics, the Club’s website recounts.

The challenge of the Club at the time was linked to the nature of the occupation of the players as most of them got transferred from Kumasi but a saviour came through in the person of Mr. J.S.K. Frimpong- a teacher by profession in 1935 who organized some men from his school as player.

The teacher of the Kumasi Government School is said to have shown interest in the Club and proposed a change of name from “Kumasi Titanics” to Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club.

The name was officially changed to Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club with the porcupine as its emblem on August 31, 1935, after permission from the then King of the Asante Kingdom, Nana Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II- the first life patron of the club, read the Club’s history.

Achievements
So far, the Club has won 24 Ghana Premier League titles and two CAF Champions Leagues.

It is believed to have ten million (10,000,000) vibrant followers.

The Club touts itself as the 6th biggest football team and professional club in Africa and the biggest in Ghana.

In 2010, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics adjudged the Porcupine Warriors as Africa’s club of the 20th century.

In a social media post on Thursday, Kotoko lauded themselves as the “lighthouse” of Ghana’s game.

“88 years of Greatness, 88 years of impacting Ghana Football and being the lighthouse of our game.”

They have been congratulated by Samartex.

“Happy anniversary to undoubtedly a great Football Club, @AsanteKotoko_SC,” it said in a Facebook post.
