Government Urged to Subsidise Farm Inputs in Rice Production
Mr. Paul Agyemang, Chairman of the Mfensi Rice Sellers Association and an esteemed farmer and miller in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region, is sounding the alarm on the pressing issue of high-cost farm inputs in rice production.
He passionately appealed to the government, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture, to urgently intervene and implement subsidies for essential farm inputs such as equipment, fertilisers, and seedlings.
“There is a strong demand for local rice among Ghanaians due to its nutritional value, but the high cost of farming inputs is hindering our ability to meet the market demand,” explains Mr. Agyemang.
He firmly believes that subsidies are crucial to support farmers and increase production capacity, thereby reducing the country’s reliance on rice imports.
Highlighting the significance of local rice production, Mr. Agyemang emphasised, “The rice industry plays a vital role in job creation and supports local poultry and livestock production as well. Many farmers cannot afford to purchase expensive foreign foods for their animals, so local rice serves as a valuable feed source.”
“While we appreciate the efforts made by the NPP government to encourage rice production, more needs to be done to address the financial challenges faced by farmers”.
He advocated for the reduction of financial burdens on farmers, enabling them to thrive and contribute to the economic growth of the nation.
