Education Minister Tours Ashanti Region: Inspects Progress of Stem Projects

The Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum has begun a 4-day tour in the Ashanti Region. Its purpose is to inspect the progress of various school projects, especially the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) projects.

The tour which begins today, April 28, 2023,  ends on Monday, May 1, 2023.

These projects will aid proper commencement and inception of the new revolutionary approach to Ghana’s Education system, which is geared towards producing more practical, creative, innovative, technical, and technological skill-oriented products. This will be at the expense of the “book and theoretical” drive that has failed us woefully as a country in our quest to produce refined elites to bring about development.

The Minister visited and inspected the progress of the STEM model Junior High School (JHS) for the Asem Cluster of Schools in the Kumasi Metropolis that began a month ago.

The Contractor, Mr. Kwame Adu Mantey was on site, and the progress of work is rated 10% as construction is at the foundation level.

Mr. Mantey, however, indicated that the project will be completed by the first quarter of 2024.

The progress of a similar project at the Kumasi Girls Senior High School was also at the foundation level, rated at 10%, and the Minister pleaded with the contractors to speed up, and complete it by the end of the year.

Speaking with the media, the Education Minister said “the Asem JHS STEM project is the first of its kind in the region alongside others at Juaben and Abenase, which are all progressing smoothly”.

“It is the vision of President Akufo-Addo to make education better and enhance Ghana’s development, and for this reason, STEM education has been initiated by the government,” he added.

He emphasised that STEM education is the new revolutionary approach in building a better future which Ghana needs to adopt.

The Minister was accompanied by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Eric Nkansah, the Ashanti Regional Education Director, National and Regional Coordinators of the Free Senior High School, the Director in charge of Tertiary education and other officials.

The team also visited schools such as the Wesley College of Education (WESCO), Methodist Demonstration Primary and JHS, Osei Tweretwie Senior High School (OKESS) and Kumasi Girls senior high school (K’GEE).

Hon. Adutwum ended his day one tour at the Kumasi High School (KUHIS).

The Minister encouraged the students, urged them to develop the “growth mindset”, and work hard to become better as the future of Ghana is in their hands.

“Always aspire to be agents of change,” he said.
