Mahama Recalls Prof Kwesi Botchwey’s Last Birthday Celebration
Former President John Dramani Mahama says the late Prof Kwesi Botchwey’s 78th birthday celebration in September was his way of saying “goodbye” in disguise to his friends.
He recalled, “We danced “Buga”, ate, and drank at your 78th birthday party.”
Mahama described his death as “a real shocker”.
He is of the strong opinion that Prof Botchwey “served your God, your country, and your party faithfully, and now it is time to have a rest.”
Prof Botchwey died on Saturday, November 19 at the Korle BU Teaching Hospital where he was receiving medical attention.
He died at age 78.
Tributes have poured in from across the country following his death.
President Akufo-Addo in a Facebook post on Monday said, “Ghana has lost a fine gentleman and exceptional public servant.”
On his part, the NDC Presidential aspirant hopeful, Kwabena Dufour described him as an “icon”, “selfless”, “diligent”, “widely respected”, “kind-hearted” and an embodiment of a strong sense of nationhood.
Botchwey attended Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School in Ghana.
He held an LL.B. from the University of Ghana, an LL.M. from Yale Law School, and a doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School.
Botchwey was appointed Finance Minister and Economic Planning from 1982 to 1995 by former and late President Jerry John Rawlings.
On Monday, November 21, Mahama together with the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress visited the family of Prof Botchwey.
