Ghana’s Monkeypox Cases Rise To 34
The number of Monkeypox cases recorded by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has increased from 18 in June 2022 to 34 in July 2022.
The GHS says that the last confirmed case of Monkeypox was recorded on July 15, 2022.
Persons infected by the Monkeypox virus are aged between 9 months and 45 years, the Director General of the GHS confirmed at a presser.
Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye said that the majority of Monkeypox patients are males.
Although no fatality has been recorded, the cases are in six regions including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Eastern and Upper West.
The Greater Accra region holds more than 50% of the total confirmed cases.
As a public health action against the disease, District Rapid Response Team and Case Management Team have been oriented on the Monkeypox Outbreak response measures.
The GHS is also involved in the dissemination of WHO management guidelines on case management; collaboration with the Veterinary Service Department to conduct assessments on affected communities; contact tracing follow-up; and enhanced education in schools and communities.
The GHS Director admitted that Ghana’s public health system is strained with the public health emergencies in the country.
