Ghana Demands Justice For Second Ghanaian Killed In New York In A Week

Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York has visited the family of 24-year-old Joseph Owusu, the second Ghanaian to be killed in New York within a week, and assured them of the government’s support to ensure justice is served.
The visit, undertaken on Tuesday, November 4, 2026, was on the directive of the Head of Mission, Ambassador and Permanent Representative Samuel Yao Kumah. The delegation was led by Deputy Permanent Representative Ben Dotsei Malor and Consul-General Anthony El-Adas.
The Mission team conveyed the condolences of the Government of Ghana to the bereaved family.
The visit was undertaken on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who phoned in to express heartfelt condolences, support, and solidarity from President Mahama and the Government of Ghana to Madam Mavis, mother of the deceased, and her family.
“I have been shocked and saddened by this tragic news, especially coming on the heels of the horrible news of the killing of 15-year-old Javits, also in the Bronx, New York,” the Minister said.
He assured the bereaved family that the Government of Ghana stands firmly with them and will work with the relevant authorities and agencies of the United States Government to ensure that justice is served.
Joseph Owusu, who worked as a caregiver supporting persons with disabilities, also served as a chorister at his local Methodist church. He is remembered by the family as a beloved son and brother, and his tragic loss has left his family and community devastated.
His death under yet-unexplained circumstances was announced to his mother, Mavis, on Saturday, October 31, by the New York City Police.
His brother, Kwadwo, called strongly for justice for Joseph, through a thorough and transparent investigation by the police into the circumstances surrounding his death and for those responsible to be brought to justice.
Police have indicated to the family that an autopsy is being conducted on the body of the late Joseph Owusu, as their investigations continue into the crime.
