Queen Máxima of the Netherlands Visits Otumfuo on Second Trip to Ghana

The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, Her Majesty Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, has paid a courtesy visit to His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, marking her second official visit to Ghana.
Her first visit took place in 2002, 24 years ago, as Princess Máxima, alongside her husband, who was then the Prince of Orange and is now the King of the Netherlands.
This recent trip to Ghana and the Manhyia Palace is in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA).
During the courtesy call on the Asantehene, she briefed him on her visits and interactions with Ghanaian farmers, staff of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), hospitals, and local markets to advance her advocacy for inclusive finance, financial health and economic well-being.
As the UNSGSA, Queen Máxima advocates for financial products and service that help people to manage their daily needs, protect them against financial setbacks, help to invest in their future and gain confidence in their financial future.
She also acknowledged and commended the crucial role the Asantehene continues to play as a peacebuilder in Ghana.
Further discussions covered governance, education, arts, and agriculture.
Queen Máxima presented a decorative Delft Blue ceramic wall plate featuring an appliquéd design, alongside an autographed photograph of herself as gifts to the Monarch.
Her delegation included H.E. Jeroen Verheul, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Ghana; Peter McConaghy, UNSGSA Senior Advisor; Thys Hoekman, the Queen’s Private Secretary; and other senior officials.
