Ghana Backs Proposed Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative At CHOGM In Antigua

Ghana has welcomed the proposed Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative, describing it as a timely response to global energy insecurity and the growing threat of climate-related disasters.
On behalf of Ghana, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, addressed a meeting on the initiative held on November 2, 2026, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda.
The initiative was conceived in response to global energy insecurity, volatile fossil fuel prices, increasingly frequent climate-related disasters and the absence of a comprehensive international framework to govern the transition.
The transition was described as both an existential necessity and a structural economic challenge requiring coordinated international cooperation.
The initiative seeks to address three issues. These are establishing international benchmarks for national action, developing an appropriate financial architecture to support the transition, and ensuring that developing countries have a meaningful role in shaping the process.
