NHIS Coverage Hits 77% In Kwabre East As NHIA Commissions New District Office

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has recorded a major leap in health insurance coverage in Kwabre East, with enrolment rising from 64 per cent last year to 77 per cent of the district’s population of about 454,000.
The Chief Executive of the Authority, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, disclosed this at the commissioning of the new NHIA Kwabre District Office.
He said the improvement reflects growing public confidence in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the Authority’s drive to bring services closer to the people.
Dr Bampoe used the occasion to highlight the Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) initiative, which he said has been rolled out in 135 districts and is expected to achieve nationwide coverage by 2027.
He noted that the initiative, which provides preventive, promotive and curative healthcare at the basic level, including CHPS compounds and polyclinics, is here to stay, stressing that no Ghanaian should be denied healthcare because of financial constraints.
On illegal charges at health facilities, Dr Bampoe announced the planned rollout of the One-Time Access Code (OTAC) system in the region to authenticate members’ attendance at facilities and improve verification of services provided.
The system, he explained, will help prevent fraudulent claims and curb extortion.
“No NHIS-credentialed facility has the right to charge members for services covered under the Scheme, and facilities found culpable will face sanctions,” he warned.
He assured residents that the new office was established to serve their needs and make NHIA services more accessible.
The Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Hon. Akwasi Gyamfi Onyina Acheampong, described the commissioning as a significant milestone for the constituency and pledged his continued support for the NHIA’s efforts to improve access to healthcare.
The ceremony was chaired by Nana Owusu Kwarteng II, Dwumakwafohene, and graced by Nana Barima Saasi Ayeboafo II, Mamponghene; the Municipal Chief Executive for Afigya Kwabre South, Hon. Patricia Pearl Ankrah; the NHIA Regional Director, Hon. Alhaji Muniru Muntaka; and other dignitaries.
