New Manhyia Museum Set for Commissioning in January

The new state-of-the-art Manhyia Palace Museum is scheduled to be officially inaugurated on January 8, 2027.

This date was selected by the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The announcement was made by the Director of the Manhyia Palace Museum, Dr Ivor Agyeman-Duah, during a courtesy visit by the Director of the British Museum, Nicholas Cullinan, to the Asantehene on November 4, 2026.

Updating the Asantehene on preparations, Dr Agyeman-Duah reported that he had led the visiting official on a tour of both the existing and new facilities, noting that the artefacts for the exhibition setup have already been selected.

The new edifice will replace the existing museum, which was originally the residence of the occupants of the Golden Stool.

The Director of the British Museum was accompanied by the Head of his Office, Horatio Lovering.

Also present at the meeting were the Chief of Staff of the Manhyia Palace, Mr Kofi Badu; the Head of Protocol, Mr Ernest Sarhene; the Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Lawrence Akwasi Prempeh; and Dr. Ivor Agyeman-Duah.

The visiting officials arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, with Wednesday’s visit to Kumasi marking their first official engagement.

As part of the itinerary, Dr Agyeman-Duah informed Otumfuo that the visiting delegation would also meet with officials at the British High Commission and other relevant stakeholders.

He added that Dr Cullinan’s visit to Kumasi aims to strengthen the five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Palace and the British Museum.
