Commercial Transport Operators Call Off Intended Sit-Down Strike

The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has called off its intended sit-down strike, which was announced in a statement dated November 2, 2026.
In a press release jointly signed by the General Secretary of GPRTU of TUC, Ghana, Mr Godfred Abulbire, and the General Secretary of GRTCC, Mr Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, the transport operators said the strike was in protest against authorities’ failure to clear roadways of trading activities.
According to the statement, the decision to call off the strike follows a meeting held on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with the Ministers of the Interior, Transport, and Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
“The Ministers assured us of their firm commitments to address our concerns, including the trading activities on road corridors, adequate signage, sustained public education and continued engagement with transport operators. A committee has been formed to identify hotspots and recommend the way forward,” the statement said.
The Unions apologised to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the planned sit-down strike would have caused.
They, however, warned that they expect all concerns raised during the meeting to be addressed within 30 days, failure of which they would have no option but to embark on the sit-down strike.
