Gender Minister Engages Students Affected By Alleged Sexual Abuse at Obuasi SHTS

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has engaged some students affected by the alleged sexual abuse at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) as part of efforts to support their well-being and ensure their concerns receive the necessary attention.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the Minister to interact with the students, listen to their concerns and reaffirm the Ministry’s commitment to working with relevant institutions to support them through the process.

Dr Lartey emphasised that the welfare, safety and dignity of the students remain paramount, noting that supporting them requires sensitivity, confidentiality and a coordinated approach that responds to their individual needs.

She also stressed the importance of protecting the students from further distress, stigma and victimisation, particularly as the relevant authorities continue investigations into the allegations.

The Minister assured that her Ministry would continue working with the Ghana Education Service, social welfare officers, health professionals and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the students receive appropriate support and that their welfare remains a priority.

The engagement forms part of the Ministry’s broader response, which includes the deployment of an advance team comprising officers from the Department of Social Welfare, the Domestic Violence Secretariat and the Department of Children to engage the affected students and their families, assess their needs and coordinate appropriate interventions.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection says it remains committed to working with relevant institutions to protect children’s rights, support affected students and strengthen systems to ensure that schools remain safe environments for learning and development.
