Skipping National Service Will Attract Sanctions – NSA Cautions Graduates

The National Service Authority (NSA) has reminded the general public of the legal requirements for national service and the repercussions for failure to comply under the National Service Authority Act.
In a statement releasing the first batch of postings for the 2026/2027 service year, the Authority cited Section 29(1) of Act 1119, which states that “a person is qualified to undertake national service if that person is a Ghanaian citizen and has completed a course of study at a tertiary education institution.”
The NSA stressed that undertaking national service is mandatory for all qualified persons, drawing attention to Section 40 of the Act, which outlines sanctions.
“An employer shall not employ a person who is qualified to undertake national service but has not undertaken national service, unless the person is exempted under Section 36.
“An employer shall ascertain from a prospective employee whether or not the prospective employee is required to undertake national service and has completed national service, or has an exemption certificate,” it quoted.
The statement warned that an employer who contravenes the provision is liable to pay to the Authority an administrative penalty of five thousand penalty units.
Furthermore, the Authority shall direct a person who obtains employment without undertaking national service to undertake the service in a field determined by the Board.
The Registrar of Companies, the Authority added, shall not register a company, partnership or business name of a person who is qualified to undertake national service but has not done so, unless the person is exempted under Section 36.
“Management therefore encourages all prospective national service personnel to comply fully with the stated procedures and timelines to facilitate their successful deployment and commencement of national service,” the statement signed by Director-General Ruth Dela Seddoh said.
