Ghana Pushes Nutrition into District Budgets to Secure Sustainable Financing
Ghana is moving to secure sustainable financing for nutrition by embedding it into how districts plan, budget and implement development programmes.
Presenting Ghana’s experience at the 7th Global Conference of the Micronutrient Forum in Accra on September 29, 2026, a Principal Planning Analyst at the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Mr Nii-Odoi Odotei, said districts are now integrating multisectoral nutrition priorities into their Medium-Term Development Plans (MTDPs).
The move, he explained, gives nutrition interventions a dedicated place in district budgets and creates a basis for tracking implementation.
According to him, the approach brings together actions across health, education, social protection and food systems, while linking national priorities, including the Medium-Term National Development Policy Framework 2026-2029 and Ghana’s Nutrition for Growth commitments, to local-level programmes and resources.
“Integrating nutrition into district plans and budgets provides a practical pathway for translating national nutrition priorities into actions at the local level, while creating a basis for tracking the implementation of planned interventions,” he noted.
He said the strategy is intended to ensure more consistent financing for nutrition and guarantee that nutrition priorities are reflected in district development planning and budgeting.
The 7th Global Conference of the Micronutrient Forum has brought together global stakeholders to share experiences and explore practical approaches to strengthening nutrition action and financing amid changing development and environmental challenges.
