Ghana Renews Call for Lifting of Cuba Sanctions
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has renewed Ghana’s call for the unconditional lifting of sanctions against Cuba.
He made the call when he met his Cuban counterpart, Comrade Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla, on the margins of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
Mr Ablakwa said Ghana stands in solidarity with Cuba amid its current challenges and praised the resilience of the Cuban people.
The two Ministers discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in health, scholarships and training, energy, agriculture and economic development.
On health, they reviewed the long-standing arrangement that deploys Cuban medical volunteers to Ghana and offers training for Ghanaian doctors in Cuba.
They also explored technical collaboration to address energy and infrastructure challenges, and exchanged views on the need for solidarity among developing countries, respect for sovereignty, and stronger multilateral cooperation.
The position, Mr Ablakwa noted, echoes President John Dramani Mahama’s call at the UN for an unconditional end to sanctions against Cuba.
He added that Ghana was pleased that relief items donated to Cuba in November 2025 arrived in good condition and made the needed impact.
Mr Ablakwa further conveyed Ghana’s congratulations to Cuba on the centenary anniversary of Comrade Fidel Castro and said Ghana is committed to deepening practical cooperation that benefits both peoples.
