Austria Donates Military Dogs to GAF
Austria has donated highly trained military working dogs to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to counter asymmetric threats, secure border communities and protect critical national infrastructure.
This was disclosed when the Austrian Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Jürgen Heissel, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Defence, Hon Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, to explore avenues for strategic cooperation, knowledge transfer and capacity-building initiatives.
The discussions centred primarily on navigating emerging security dynamics within West Africa and along the Sahel region, with both parties emphasising the need for coordinated approaches to preserve regional stability.
H.E. Heissel commended Ghana’s sustained democratic peace and reaffirmed Austria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and defence collaboration.
He affirmed that Austria remains open to facilitating deeper partnerships through sister agencies to assist in retooling and advancing GAF’s operational readiness.
Welcoming the delegation, Hon Adjei expressed appreciation for Austria’s technical support, specifically pointing to Austria’s expertise in defence management, cyber security and specialised canine handling.
He noted that contemporary transnational security threats demand robust multilateral collaboration and concerted regional efforts across both maritime and terrestrial areas.
To build a modern and resilient military force, the Defence Minister appealed for expanded Austrian assistance in logistics support, equipment modernisation, heavy machinery training and tactical exchange programmes.
Hon Adjei assured that his Ministry would expedite the processes required to sign and ratify a formal defence cooperation agreement.
