Gender Ministry Urges Parents to Prioritise Home Safety

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has urged parents and guardians to prioritise safety measures at home.

This follows the death of a young girl in a fire incident at Cantonments, Accra.

In a press statement dated September 23, 2026, the Ministry said the tragedy should serve as a wake-up call for households to be more vigilant in protecting children from domestic hazards.

The Ministry, while commiserating with the bereaved family, said parents and caregivers must take practical steps to prevent such incidents.

It advised that matches, lighters and other sources of fire should be kept out of the reach of children, electrical appliances and installations should be checked to ensure they are safe, and young children should not be left unattended.

“Households are also encouraged to observe basic fire safety measures, have emergency evacuation arrangements in place and where age-appropriate, teach children what to do in the event of an emergency,” the statement said.

The Ministry disclosed that the Ghana National Fire Service has commenced investigations into the incident to establish the cause of the fire, which will inform measures to prevent future occurrences.

It stressed that child protection is a shared responsibility, urging families, communities and relevant institutions to identify risks early and promote safe environments for children.
